One of the greatest ecological disasters the US has ever seen. Chestnut blight wiped out the American chestnut tree in less than 50 years. A tree that once made up nearly 25% of the eastern forests was reduced to a functionally extinct species. The Asian fungus Cryphonectria parasitica was accidentally introduced into the United States in the late 1800s. While a few diseased chestnuts were noted in the 1880s and 90s, it wasn't until 1904 that the pathogen was identified in New York City. Fro

American chestnuts dominated Virginia's forests until an introduced fungal blight wiped them into functional extinction. Watch how researchers from DOF and the Virginia Chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation use controlled pollination to breed chestnuts with greater blight resistance to restore this iconic tree species. 🌰🧪🌳 | Virginia Department of Forestry

This is a chestnut tree, but is it the Chinese chestnut or the very uncommon to find a mature American Chestnut. All my research points to Chinese but the key tipping points are the leathery leaves and visible lenticils on the twigs. Lenticils are like the pores of the tree-visible on cherry and birch trees too. I’m heading out to check on some land I won in an auction that has what I believe is an American chestnut tree, baby, but still. I’m bringing a small branch from this tree so I can compa

There are a few putative survivor American Chestnut trees growing in Philadelphia, but they’ve never been tested. I’m sending in a sample of two nearby trees to the PA/NJ chapter of the American Chestnut Foundation! In ~2 months, we should know more about the tree and if it’s actually a resistant American chestnut, or a hybrid of some sort. I’ll keep you all updated! #trees #americanchestnut #castaneadentata #chestnut #tree #arborist #urbanforestry #philadelphia #philly #chestnutblight | Andrew

Once known as the "redwood of the East," the American Chestnut tree was a towering giant of the Appalachian forests—providing food, lumber, and livelihoods. But in the early 1900s, a deadly blight nearly wiped it out. In this video, we explore the rise and tragic fall of the American Chestnut, its importance to mountain communities, and the inspiring efforts underway to restore this legendary tree to its former glory. | The Appalachian Project
