Any straight edge 1/4” thick ruler can be used to machine quilt and achieve stitch in the ditch. I have found, however, that this leads to more crooked seams. Our tendency is to gently move the ruler to make sure that our needles stays in the ditch. By having a ditch alignment, tab not only are we guaranteed that the needle will land exactly in the ditch, but we can see by comparing the offset edge of the ruler with the seam if there’s any bowing and adjust the seam accordingly.
