POKE SALLET WILD LUNCH 🌱 Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) is an abundant native plant that is well known for being toxic when consumed, however, it is also known for being edible and medicinal. In order to eat pokeweed, certain preparations are needed. Because the leaves are technically toxic, they must be boiled 2-3 times in order to render them safe to consume. Today I made poke sallet with a twist. Instead of using the traditional bacon and onions, I decided to use ground lamb and ramps. I al

Today we’re taking a look at a common native plant American pokeweed! When in Doubt If it’s magenta highlighter pink color than it’s probably poke weed! Blanching is something that can be intimidating for beginners so definitely take your time getting into it and be \u00100 sure of the plants that you’re looking at! Always remember to do your identification first and foraging second! #foraging #fyp #nature #food #history | Shane Alden Edwards

⚠️ POKEWEED TONIC 🍇 🌿 Lots of people are surprised that I use pokeroot as a medicine, because, well, it's toxic, and can be deadly toxic. But like with most things in life, "it is the dose that makes something a poison" 😉 》》--------------》 ☣️ The entire pokeweed plant is toxic, with the root being the most toxic part and the ripe berries being the least. Despite the fears that surround this plant many still use it as an amazing traditional medicine, myself included. ♀️ Indigenous tribes here

RISE | Austin Black Freedom Communities on Instagram: "Ms. Flo walks us through how to make poke salad — a traditional Southern dish made from the pokeweed plant (Phytolacca americana). Pokeweed grew abundantly where she’s from in Manchaca, Texas, but it has to be handled with care. The plant is poisonous if not prepared correctly, which is why it must be washed thoroughly and boiled multiple times, with the water discarded each time, to make it safe to eat. Ms. Flo is featured in our upcoming f

Jason🌱Chef•UrbanFarmer•Forager on Instagram: "Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana) is hard to miss with its towering stalks, striking magenta stems, and clusters of deep purple berries. It’s beautiful. It’s also TOXIC ☠️ And yet… for generations, it’s been foraged, cooked, and eaten—especially in Appalachia, the rural South, and among communities who had to turn adversity into sustenance. The dish is called poke sallet—not “salad,” despite the spelling. The key is preparation: 🌱Only young, tender s

Some people regard Pokeweed berries (Phytolacca americana) as a lookalike, but if you can recognize the compound leaves, this won’t be an issue! Another reason why it’s important to identify the compound leaves is to see that the arrangement is opposite. If you can’t do that, a more likely mistake would be Devil’s Walking Stick (Aralia spinosa), which has very similar berry clusters. Not confident in spotting compound leaves and leaf arrangement? No problem! I have a entire FREE Tree & Shrub ID
